Monkey Gallery (1953-1955)
During the mid 1950s, the Daily News and the Ceylon Observer published a series of cartoons by Aubrey Collette, a satirical cartoonist, where Sinhalese people who spoke little or no English and their supporters were depicted as monkeys. These cartoons provide a unique window into the lasting effects of colonisation during the post-independence period.
